초록

The study aimed at examining beginner Korean EFL college learners’ perception and production of the English voiceless fricative and their relationship. In total, 42 students took a listening test as a perception test and a speaking test as a production test. The results indicated that the beginner learners’ overall perception preceded their production in all paired sounds, and their relationship was statistically significant (t=-2.573, *p<.05), except for the /f-v/ and /ʃ-ʒ/ paired sounds. However, the students’ performance of each paired sound in both tests was different. That was, while they had the most difficulty in distinguishing the /f-v/ pair in the perception test, the /ɵ-ð/ paired sound was considered the most challenging for them in the production test. Based on the findings of the study, the pedagogical implications for teaching the English fricative were discussed.

Abstract

That was, while they had the most difficulty in distinguishing the /f-v/ pair in the perception test, the /ɵ-ð/ paired sound was considered the most challenging for them in the production test. Based on the findings of the study, the pedagogical implications for teaching the English fricative were discussed.
