초록

The purpose of this study is to review the previous studies on double object constructions and propose a new approach to double-object constructions, employing the “phase-shift” (Seo 2015), which is tied to the change of aspects of verbs and an extensive version of telicity. Although many scholars argue that double-object verbs should have the “HAVE” property, those with “taking-away” verbs, such as spare, forgive, and cost, have not been explained enough in terms of only the “HAVE” property. Based on the syntactic and semantic similarities, presented by Beck and Johnson (2004), between double object constructions and resultative constructions, this study tries to explain the syntactic and semantic behaviors of “taking-away” verbs and those of “give-type” verbs with respect to “phase-shift.”
