초록

As the Hispanic population continues to grow in the United States (U.S.), so does the academic interest in Spanish in the U.S. This paper examines sociolinguistic research trends, methodologies, and changes in approaches to the study of Los Angeles Vernacular Spanish (LAVS), considered one of the varieties of Spanish, classified as a ‘koine’, an integration of several Mexican rural dialects together with Salvadoran Spanish. This paper also examines the research cases that address dialect contact between Mexican and Salvadoran speakers, differences in language use between first and second generation immigrants, and dialectal leveling. After analyzing the previous research trends that have characterized research on Spanish in Southern California, we suggest to conduct sociolinguistic research in Korea as well, considering the following groups: Spanish heritage speakers in Korea and Spanish-Korean bilinguals from Spanish- speaking countries.
