마음과 몸에 대한 철학적 논의들은 수없이 많다. 그만큼 중요한 문제이다. 이와 관련된 서양철학적 논의들은 대체로 마음과 몸의 서양철학적 이원론에서 비롯된 문제를 어떻게 하면 풀어낼 수 있는가하는 문제로 집약된다. 이원론은 그 자체가 문제이다. 둘 사이에 길이 없음이 이원론이요, 길이 없음이 바로 아포리아(문제)이기에 그러하다. 데카르트의 이원론(문젯거리)을 풀고자 유물론이니 유심론이니 하는 일원론적 이론들(문제해결)이 자연히 뒤따라 나오게 마련이다. 그러나 데카르트의 이원론 자체가 가당치 않은 이야기라면, 문제해결책도 온전한 이야기가 못될 것임은 당연하다. 대체로 이러한 문제의식을 지니고, 우리에게 주어져 있는 것을 바탕으로 삼아 마음과 몸의 연관성을 그럴듯하게 이야기해보려는 것이 - 아직은 미완의 주제로 남아있다 - 이 글의 의도이다. 그래서 의의가 크게 찾아지지는 못했으나, 마음과 몸에 관련된 우리말 쓰임새를 한글사전에서나마 찾아본다. 그리고 서양사상사에서 마음에 관한 이론들의 밑뿌리가 희랍고대의 프쉬케psyche(soul, Seele)라고 보기에, 프쉬케라는 말의 본래적 의미가 그리고 이와 짝을 이루는 소마soma(body, Leib)라는 말의 의미가 희랍고대 호머시대와 희랍고전 철학시기를 거치면서 어떻게 변하여갔는가를, 우리말 몸, 숨, 목숨, 가슴, 넋, 얼, 마음, 가슴, 배, 머리 따위의 말들과 연관 지워 보면서, 미루어 헤아려본다.
Abstract
There are many papers about the relation of mind and body. This thesis is so great problem. The western modern philosophical discourses on this problem begin from the dualism of two substances, so to speak res cogitans and res extensa. On the point of philosophical view, the dualism is by itself problem, that is aporia. Aporia means originally 'there is no way between two' and this is also the meaning of dualism. The solution of dualism as problem is monism. The modern materialism and the spiritualism are the answers of this problem. But if Descartes' dualism about the relation of mind and body is nonsense, the solutions are useless. So I begin from the words which are given directly to us to prove this assumption suitable. I think about and reflect on the old Greek words, psyche and soma, and the modern Korean words, mom(몸, body), maem(마음, mind), sum(숨, breath), moksum(목숨, life), gasem(가슴, heart), bae(배, belly), meri(머리, head) and so on. And I come to a thought that the developments of the mind as the capacity of making, speaking and thinking have origin in the developments of human's cultural body as well as walking by two legs.
