Abstract
The purpose of this paper is to search the origin and the changing process of Sāṁkhya thought in the periodic stream. Sāṁkhya is the most important and oldest thought in India. At the same time, it has influenced Indians' consciousness and all about it`s cultures. Thereupon, to understand Sāṁkhya means to grasp the core or basis of Indian thought. To know its origin and developmental process, we need to search them deviding before and after on the basis of Sāṁkhya-kārikā. At the proto-Sāṁkhya, it did not have consistant system, it revealed fragments, and sometimes unifed with Indian mythology. Nevertheless, We can find fundamental concepts- Puruṣa, Prakṛti, guṇa, etc- of Sāṁkhya in them. Through these common points about basic problems, We can find consistant tradition of Sāṁkhya. In this course, it was revealed whether the orign of Sāṁkhya was one, or not. It seems that the develpoment of post Sāṁkhya-kārikā has continued traditional theory till 8C. However, after the appearance of Vedantic thought, Sāṁkhya also could not get out of their influences. As a result, it unified with them. Vācaspati Miśra and Vijñābhikṣu were representative persons. They interpreted Sāṁkhya on the basis of Vedāntic theory, especially, the latter brought about extreme criticism of traditional Sāṁkhya. Yet, on the other viewpoint, through the mergence of Sāṁkhya into Vedānta, it rather became the opportunity to accomplish the ontology of Indian philosophy. As a result, though details of Sāṁkhya was changed a certain degree, its influence was not reduced. It is still sustaining to Indians' thoughts and its culture.
