플라톤 철학 전통에 대한 패러다임적 변형으로서의 플로티노스의 '일자' 형이상학

신플라톤주의의 시조 플로티노스는 새로운 통찰로 8세기에 걸친 그리스 철학사상을 하나의 거대한 형이상학적 체계로 완성하였다. 특히 플라톤 철학 전통을 새롭게 변형시켜, 자신만의 고유한 ‘일자’ 형이상학으로 자리 매김하였다. 일자로부터의 하강과 일자로의 상승이라는 개념으로 요약되는 그의 형이상학은 전통적인 플라톤 철학과 차별화되는 새로운 철학이다.이러한 플로티노스 철학의 핵심은 ‘관상’과 ‘자유’이다. 관상이라는 개념은 일자와 지성 그리고 영혼이라는 플로티노스의 세 가지 실체들을 이해하는데 있어 핵심적인 장치이며, 일자로부터의 ‘발출’과 ‘체류’ 그리고 ‘회귀’의 본질을 이해하는데 있어서도 주된 개념이다. 모든 실체들과 존재들은 무한한 관상에 의해서 태어나고, 인간 영혼은 관상을 통하여 절대자인 일자에게로 나아가기 때문이다. 합일과 엑스타시(ecstasy)도 관상과 연결되어 있다. 자유라는 개념은 플로티노스 형이상학의 본질을 드러낸다. 일자의 본질은 자유이며, 일자에게서 자유 아닌 것은 없기 때문이다. 일자의 모든 활동은 자유로우며, 일자는 어떠한 물리적 필연성에 의해서도 방해를 받지 않는다. 일자는 완전하게 그 자신의 지배자이며, 그의 존재는 철저하게 자유에 의해 유지된다. 이 2가지 요소로 인하여, 플로티노스의 일자 형이상학은 전통적인 플라톤 철학과 불연속 한다.
Abstract
Plotinus, the father of Neo-platonism, completed Greek philosophy as a huge metaphysics. Especially transforming Paradigm on the Platonic tradition, he built his own metaphysics of 'the One'. It is sure that his metaphysics could be summarized with two conceptions which are accent and decent from 'the One'. These are different from the Platonic tradition. The key points of Platonism are contemplation and freedom. Contemplation is the core device to understand two concepts. One is three hypostases of Plotinus which are 'the One', 'the intellect', and 'the soul'. The Other is the essences of 'procession(proodos)', ' continuity(monē)', and 'return(epistrophē)'. All existence and entity is born from infinite contemplation, and the human soul moves on forward through contemplation. Syncretism and ecstasy are also connected to contemplation. The concept named freedom reveals the essence of Plotinus' metaphysics. The essence of 'the One' is freedom because all constituents of 'the One' are free. All is free in 'the One', and 'the One' is not blocked by any physical restriction. 'The One' is totally his own controller, and his existence is thoroughly maintained by the freedom. By these two concepts, Plotinus' metaphysics of 'the One' is discontinuous from traditional Platonism.
