Abstract
This paper investigated aspect of li(理) as a pattern of nature. Avowedly, the study on li have been biased toward the aspect of Confucianism ethics. However, Li was also the pattern of nature. The scholars who had to build a theory that is necessary to govern Qin(秦) and Han(漢) empire proposed a pattern, which could be applied to society and nature. Ancient scientists applied this theory to the various sciences such as Chinese alchemy and East Asian medicine. The pattern, that is li, is a manual that direct action rather than the law of nature in the perspective of the West. Therefore, one can deviate from the pattern, but he or she should face difficulties derived from deviation. The theoretical base that things can reply to pattern was nature that they are given from the birth. By reinterpreting the theory of nature, the founders of traditional East Asian science built a relatively complete theory that can be used as a basic theory for science.
