2형 당뇨병은 세계적으로 증가추세에 있고 우리나라도 예외는 아니다. 당뇨병은 개인뿐 아니라 사회경제적으로 미치는 영향이 크고, 일단 발병된 뒤에는 만성경과를 보여 관리에 어려움을 겪기 때문에 당뇨병의 일차 예방을 위한 노력을 기울일 필요가 있다. 지금까지 생활습관교정 및 여러 가지 약제를 이용한 2형 당뇨병 예방의 효과에 대해 많은 연구가 진행되었다. 생활습관교정은 2형 당뇨병 예방의 효과적인 면에서 매우 우수하지만, 이를 적용하고 유지하는 데 실제적인 어려움이 적지 않다. 반면 여러 약제들은 다양한 효과들을 보이지만, 몇몇 부작용 및 비싼 약제비로 인해 일반화시켜 적용하기에는 무리가 있다. 일차진료의사는 각각의 중재방법의 효과 및 장단점을 알아야 하고, 2형 당뇨병 이환의 위험이 높은 사람들에게 적절한 중재방법을 선택하여 제시할 줄 알아야 한다.
