Abstract

Mythology is the intellectual product of the first period when human beings attempted to understand the world in a systematic way out of primitive thinking, and it tells interesting stories that reveal the world view of a society. This paper aims to explore the world image and cosmography in the mythological works left by the ancient Greeks. In the late 8th century BC, after receiving a long tradition of oral poetry, Homer left Iliad and Odyssey, the stories of gods and heroes, and Hesiod wrote Theogony, the story of the origins of the world. These epic works often refer to the specific times and places of mythical events, as well as to the spatio-temporal beginnings of the world. And in particular the concepts of place, such as heaven and earth, mountains and sea, rivers and lakes, appear in the name of many gods. Here, in light of the way these words were expressed, we can extract the image of the world that people in the age of these works would have had. Of course, myth is not a product of a single writer, and mythological traditions can conflict with each other, so we can not get a single, complete picture of the world. Nonetheless, if we reconstruct the overall outline, we can at least find the roots of Western ideas like ‘spherical universe’ and ‘geocentricism’.
