순수수단으로서 기술과 매체: 발터 벤야민의 폭력비판과 정치 프로그램을 중심으로

발터 벤야민의 폭력비판론은 마르쿠제의 68혁명론, 데리다의 현혹적인 독법, 아감벤의 일방적인 전유방식, 포스트모던의 정치신학적 변형 등으로 오늘날까지도 논란과 공방의 중심에 서있다. 이에 이 글은 전유자의 주관적 관심과 의도에 따라 2차적으로 가공되는 기존의 수용방식에서 방향을 전환하여 벤야민 텍스트 자체의 분석과 고찰을 제안한다. 이를 위해 본 연구는 폭력비판론에 담겨있는 순수수단 개념에 논의를 집중하고, 이 개념에 함축된 매체철학적 의미와 더불어 정치철학적 의미를 조명해보고자 한다. 또한 폭력비판론이 벤야민 초기 철학에서 차지하는 위상과 후기 사유발전에서 지속적으로 관여한 계기와 의미를 가늠해볼 것이다. 순수수단 개념은 무엇보다도 데리다의 해체론적 독법에서 간과되어온 주요 범주이기에, 그 간과된 측면을 데리다의 해석과 벤야민 텍스트의 내재적 분석을 바탕으로 비판적으로 검토하는 과정을 밟을 것이다. 끝으로 폭력비판론의 텍스트 발생사를 배경으로 벤야민의 폭력비판론이 초기 정치 프로그램이라는 큰 틀 안에서 재조명될 필요성을 밝힐 것이며, 그 시각에서 후기사상으로 연결될 사유단초의 흐름을 재구성해볼 것이다. 순수수단 개념은 법지배수단의 대안으로서 매체철학적 구상, 그 안에 함축된 포괄적인 정치적 의미, 무엇보다 비폭력적 수단의 순수성을 기반으로 한 정치철학적 전망을 담고 있다. 벤야민이 열거한 일련의 순수수단 사례들은 이른바 철학이론의 전통(특히 근대철학의 변증법)에서 매개이자 중재(Vermittlung)라는 사유방식으로 이어져온 메타매체론적 함축성을 띠고 있다. 매체란 타자성 때문에 존재한다. 이것과 저것을 연결하고 매개하기 위해 사이의 시공간에 들어서는 것이 메타매체의 요건이다. 요컨대 벤야민이 사회적 이해관계의 대립을 폭력 없이 중재할 방안을 물을 때, 법관계란 목적과 수단의 착종으로 인해 사회적 대립의 매개라는 과제에서 구조적으로 좌초하는 사회적 매체(≒수단, Medium)라 할 것이다. 이와 같은 매체론적 사유는 근‧현대 기술의 순수성에 대한 정치적 전망도 또한 가능하게 한다.
Abstract
Walter Benjamin's Critique of Violence is at the center of controversies and rows even today due to Marcuse's Theory of 68 Revolution, Derrida's dazzling reading method, Agamben's unilateral method of appropriation, post-modern political theological change, and others. Thus, this study presents the analysis and examination of Benjamin's texts themselves by shifting from the existing acceptance mode which is secondarily processed according to subjective interest and intention of appropriator. For that, this study intends to place the focus of discussion on the concept of 'Pure Means', which is included in the Theory on the Critique of Violence, and to shed light on the implications of this concept in terms of media philosophy and political philosophy. In addition, this study will examine the status of Theory of Critique of Violence in Benjamin's early philosophy and look into the motives and significance which led the Theory of Critique of Violence to be constantly involved in the development of reasoning in the latter period. As the concept of 'Pure Means' falls under a major category that has been overlooked, inter alia, in Derrida's deconstructionistic reading method, the process will be undertaken for critically reviewing the overlooked aspects based on Derrida's interpretation and immanent analysis of Benjamin's texts. Finally, this study will highlight the need for revisiting Benjamin's Theory of Critique of Violence within the large framework called 'early political program' against the background of the history of generations of the texts of the Theory of Critique of Violence. Furthermore, it will reconstruct the flow of the reasoning clues leading to the ideology of the latter period from such a perspective. The concept of 'Pure Means' incorporates the political philosophical outlook based on the media philosophical conception, its comprehensive political implications, and particularly, the purity of 'non-violent means' as the alternative to the 'means for the rule of law'. A series of examples of 'pure means', listed by Benjamin, have the meta media implications that have been passed down in the form of the reasoning mode called the 'intermediation' and 'intercession' (Vermittelung) in the tradition of the theories of philosophy (particularly, the dialectic in modern philosophy). Media exists due to the alterity. Meta media enters the temporal and spatial dimension to connect and mediate these things and those things. For example, when Benjamin asks about the measures to mediate the clash of social interests without violence, the relationship of laws would be the social media (≒ means, medium) that fails structurally in the task for the 'media of social confrontation' due to the entangling of the 'end' and the 'means'. Such reasoning based on media theory also brings the political perspectives towards the purity of modern and contemporary technologies.
