Abstract
This paper is an attempt to elucidate the relevance Socrates’s critique of self-knowledge suggested as a definition of sōphrosynē(temperance) in Plato’s Charmides has to “the care of the soul” mentioned in the Prologue of this dialogue. For this purpose, it is of primary importance to perceive the fundamental difference between Socrates and Critias in their conception of self-knowledge. It was to show that temperate man clearly knows “the fine benefit” provided by temperance that Critias defined temperance as self-knowledge. He, through the new interpretation of the Delphic inscription “Know thyself”, thought of self-knowledge as the best pursuit of human being. This interpretation, however, denies the moral meaning originally implied in this inscription, i.e. the knowledge of limitation of mortal human being. Self-knowledge of this sort is basically different from the socratic self-knowledge in Apology, i.e. the knowledge of his own ignorance. And a variety of interpretation has been suggested concerning the reason Critias altered his own definition of temperance, from “knowledge of oneself” to “knowledge of knowledge”. In my view, this alteration was made in order to articulate his own thoughts more clearly. When Socrates says the knowledge of knowledge could be empty if it were not for first-order knowledge, I tried to argue, he is not revealing limitations of Socratic philosophical method emphasizing the knowledge of ignorance but criticizing Critian conception of self-knowledge. In sum, Plato, in his critique of Critias’ conception of self-knowledge, revealing his ignorance of the knowledge of good and evil, shows that soul therapy is impossible without perception of this ignorance.
