가능세계의미론 체계의 기본 구성요소들인 가능세계들과 가능개체들을 설명하는 이론인 가능세계이론들은 전통적인 분류에 따르면 크게 루이스의 양상실재론과 양상현실론으로 구분된다. 루이스의 양상실재론은 모든 양상명제들에 대한 환원적 분석이 가능하는 등 양상현실론에 대비하여 몇 가지 이론적 장점들을 지닌 이론이다. 이러한 장점들에도 불구하고 양상실재론은 현실세계와 독립적으로 가능세계들과 가능개체들이 논리적 공간 속에 실제로 존재한다는 비직관적인 형이상학을 견지하고 있다는 비판을 받아왔다. 로젠의 양상허구론은 양상실재론이 고수하고 있는 형이상학적 입장을 피하면서 양상실재론이 가진 설명력과 장점들을 확보하려는 시도이다. 양상허구론에서는 양상실재론의 핵심 내용으로 이루어진 공준들과 우주의 내재적 특징들에 관한 비양상적 참들로 구성된 백과사전으로 하나의 허구인 PW를 구성하고, 이 허구인 PW에 근거하여 의미론적 해석을 제공한다. 양상허구론에 따르면, 양상실재론의 핵심 내용으로 구성된 PW가 허구이므로 허구인 공상소설들이 존재론적 개입을 하지 않듯이 양상허구론은 가능세계들과 가능개체들에 대한 존재론적 개입을 피할 수 있고 동시에 양상실재론의 장점들이 확보될 수 있다. 그러나 양상허구론의 이러한 주장은 결코 정당화될 수 없다. 서유기와 같은 공상소설들은 나름대로 완성된 줄거리로 구성되어 있는 반면 PW의 핵심 구성요소인 백과사전은 원칙적으로 결코 완성될 수 없을 것이기 때문이다.
Abstract
Possible world theories which attempt to explain the notion of possible world can be divided into two groups. One is modal realism and the other is modal actualism. It has been told that modal realism has theoretical benefits over modal actualism. One of them is that in modal realism every modal sentence can be explained in terms of first order logic without any primitive notion of modality. However modal realism has a serious problem, since in the framework of modal realism the appeal to possible world semantics commits us to radical realism that possible worlds and possible objects exist in logical space in the same manner as this physical world and physical objects. Modal fictionalism is an attempt to secure all the theoretical advantages of modal realism without holding the ontological commitment of modal realism. However it seems that the attempt of modal fictionalism cannot be succeeded. Unlike real fictions, PW cannot be completed, since the encyclopaedia, the basic component of PW, cannot be completed. And so, the analogical explanation that PW is a fiction like a real fiction such as Snow White cannot be justified.
