Abstract
This article is intended to show the superiority of philosophy to poetry in the contest for supremacy regarding wisdom, that is, wisdom relating to erōs by examining the correlation comic writer Aristophanes with Aristophanes the character in the Symposium. The superiority of philosophy to poetry in Aristophanes' speech is gradually established by analyzing the complex tension between erōs and nomos. The first reason for the superiority of philosophy is the distress of erōs asserted by Aristophanes and in fact Arisophanes' such sorrowful understanding about human beings is derived from his notion that it is impossible for man to transcendent man's body. In contrast, Diotima argued the notion of ascending erōs for the purpose of showing the beautiful itself and therefore proved the superiority of philosophy to poetry confined to body. The next point for the superiority of philosophy is to subordinate erōs to Zeus. In addition, polis is the product of Zeus' trick that perpetuates man's political subordinated to the Olympian gods. Similarly it is revealed that the piety recommended by Aristophanes is ultimately 'a noble lie'. With a view to refuting the argument of Aristophanes let's review the function of polis and the relation of polis and individual in Plato's political thought. In Plato polis is inseparable to her members and in short polis perfects the insufficient individual.
