Abstract
This thesis aims to research philosophical contents related with the goal and way as subject proper to teenagers in philosophy curriculum of Korean high school. It deals with the concepts of happiness as the goal of life from ancient Greek people to Aristotle, and examines Aristotle' view on the way of life and the citizen education for the good life. Human beings pursue by nature happiness. We need to understand the good, soul, and excellence which are the most important three concepts related with happiness in ancient Greek ethics. The ultimate goal of human activity is 'the Good' or 'the Supreme Good'. Happiness is, as Aristotle claimed, to require 'the completeness', 'the self-sufficiency' which offer the criteria to discriminate the good. The way of human life is divided into the life of enjoyment, the life of action or political life, and the life of contemplation. Aristotle regards the life of contemplation as the good life. He recognizes that it is higher life than the political life. Human being is yet by nature political animal. The life of human being, as Aristotle said, consists in business and leisure. Aristotle is concerned especially with leisure. It makes political life much like contemplative life. The practice of virtues or excellences relating to leisure is philosophy. It renders the ordinary citizen's life as happy as possible.
