Abstract

Traditionally, paradoxes are classified into two groups; one is set-theoretical paradoxes and the other is semantic paradoxes. However, it seems that whether this traditional classification of paradoxes into two groups is justifiable is intimately related with the possible solutions to paradoxes. If some paradoxes arse because of some peculiarity of set-theoretical concepts and some other paradoxes arse because of some peculiarity of semantic concepts, this classification should be considered as an acceptable one. But if every important paradox arises because of something common to all paradoxes this classification couldn't be considered as a justifiable one. Many philosophers who follow this traditional classification of paradoxes try to find the solutions to the liar paradox which belongs to semantic paradoxes. However it seems to me that all of them can not be considered as satisfactory solutions to the paradox. And also, it seems that the basic reason for this classification is not that certain. Because some of semantic paradoxes could be understood as a version of set-theoretical paradoxes.
