본 논문은 니체 철학의 주요 주제 중 하나인 허무주의의 발생 원인을 파악하고, 허무주의의 다양한 유형들의 특성을 분석한 후, 니체의 허무주의와 운명애의 관계에 관해 살펴보고자 한다. 언뜻 보기에 운명애는 허무주의를 극복하는 방법이라기보다는 허무주의를 수용하는 체념적 태도로 이해될 수 있다. 하지만 본 논문은 니체의 저작들 속에 여기저기 흩어져 있는 관련 글들을 재구성하여 운명애가 어떤 근거에서 허무주의를 극복하는 방법이 될 수 있는지에 관해 논의할 것이다. 허무주의라는 개념은 니체의 후기 사유에서 핵심적인 역할을 한다. 니체는 자신의 철학적 문제의식을 포괄적이면서도 적절하게 담고 있는 개념을 발견한 것이다. 물론 니체는 허무주의자로 남아 있지 않았다. 그는 허무주의의 본질을 인식한 후 그 극복 방법을 찾는 데 온힘을 기울였다. 그리고 그는 왜 사람들이 절망과 정향성 상실에 이르게 되는지, 왜 헛됨의 파토스와 무의미의 감정에 사로잡혀 허무주의자가 되는지에 관하여 숙고했다. 본 논문은 허무주의가 발생하게 되는 원인을 ‘절망’과 ‘정향성 상실’이라는 두 측면에서 파악할 것이다. 니체는 근대의 ‘신의 죽음’ 현상은 허무주의를 야기할 것이라고 예견했다. ‘신’은 진리와 가치 판단의 절대적 기준이었고 삶에 목표와 의미를 제공하던 정향성의 근거였기 때문이다. 하지만 대다수의 사람들은 허무주의에 빠져 있지 않거나 허무주의를 회피한다. ‘신의 죽음’에 관해 관심이 없을뿐더러 실존적인 위기 없이 일상을 잘 살고 있다. 니체는 이 현상을 ‘불완전한 허무주의’라고 부르고 왜 이러한 현상이 일어나는지에 관해 논의한다. 그리고 니체는 허무주의의 본질을 인식한 ‘완전한 허무주의’에는 어떤 유형들이 있는지, 그 특성들은 무엇인지에 관해 자신의 여러 글들에서 사유하고 있다. 본 논문은 이러한 허무주의 현상들에 관해서도 살펴보고자 한다. 이와 같이 본 논문은 허무주의의 발생 원인, 불완전한 허무주의의 특성, 완전한 허무주의의 여려 유형들, 즉 급진적 허무주의, 수동적 허무주의, 능동적 허무주의, 극단적 허무주의 등이 갖고 있는 상이한 특성들을 분석할 것이다. 그러고 나서 가치의 문제를 관점주의와 관련하여 논의한 후, 끝으로 운명애가 어떤 근거에서 허무주의를 극복하는 대안이 될 수 있는지를 살펴볼 것이다.
Abstract
This thesis attempts to understand Nietzsche’s account of nihilism, which is one of the main themes of Nietzsche’s philosophy. It thus examines the various types of nihilism Nietzsche himself discusses, and analyzes the relationship between Nietzsche’s nihilism and the notion of the love of fate (Amor fati). At first glance, the love of fate might be understood as a resignated attitude accepting nihilism rather than a way to overcome nihilism. This thesis also explores on what grounds the love of fate can be a way to overcome nihilism, by reconstructing the related articles scattered throughout Nietzsche’s works. The concept of nihilism plays a key role in Nietzsche’s later thinking. Nietzsche discovered a concept containing his philosophical problematization comprehensively and appropriately. Of course, Nietzsche did not remain a nihilist. After recognizing the nature of nihilism, he devoted himself to finding ways to overcome it. He pondered why people are lead to despair and the loss of orientation, and why they become nihilists by being caught up in the pathos of vanity and feelings of meaninglessness. This paper will analyze Nietzsche’s account of the causes of nihilism. Nietzsche predicted that the modern ‘death of God’ phenomenon would lead to nihilism. This is because ‘God’ was the absolute criterion for the judgment of truth and values, and the basis of orientation that provided goals and meanings for life. However, a vast majority of people neither fall into nihilism nor avoid nihilism. Not only are they interested in the ‘death of God’, but they also live well without existential crises. Nietzsche calls this phenomenon ‘incomplete nihilism’ and discusses why it occurs. And Nietzsche presents his thoughts in his various writings on types of ‘complete nihilism’, which recognizes the nature of nihilism, and on their characteristics. This thesis also tries to examine these nihilistic phenomena. Now, this paper deals with the causes of nihilism in Chapter 2 and examines the characteristics of incomplete nihilism in Chapter 3. Chapter 4 compares various types of complete nihilism: radical nihilism, passive nihilism, active nihilism, and extreme nihilism. Chapter 5 deals with the issue of value in relation to perspectivism, and finally, Chapter 6 illuminates on what grounds the love of fate can be an alternative to overcoming nihilism.
