추상과 구체 사이 보편의 문제는 철학사에서 중요하게 취급되었던 주제 중 하나다. 우리는 그 사례를 괴테의 자연과학이나 헤겔의 개념론 등에서 찾아볼 수 있다. 그러나이들보다 앞선 다소 의외의 지점에서도 우리는 이들과 동류의 문제의식을 발견해 볼수 있다. 바움가르텐과 칸트의 ‘감성학’(Ästhetik)이 바로 그것이다. 이 두 인물의 감성학의 내용을 검토해 보면, 거기서 우리는 추상과 구체, 보편, 특수의 문제와 관련하여나름 진지한 사유가 전개되고 있음을 목도할 수 있다. 본고는 철학사에서 좀처럼 의식되고 있지 못하는 듯 보이는 이러한 지점을 드러내기 위한 하나의 시론(試論)이다. 본고에서 논자는 바움가르텐과 칸트의 감성학의 주요 내용을 선별적으로 검토하여, 감성학에서 추상과 구체 사이 보편의 문제가 취급되고 있는 사실을 조명할 것이다. 이를위해 우선 논자는 바움가르텐이 라이프니츠의 지각이론에 기반을 두어 감성학을 제창한 배경과 그 이념을 살펴본다(2). 이어서는 칸트가 판단력비판에서 미적 반성적 판단력과 그것에 기반을 둔 취미판단의 ‘주관적 보편성’을 논하는 대목을 검토한다(3). 이리하여 논자는, 적어도 이념사적 관점에서 보았을 때, 계몽주의에서 관념론에 이르는 근대독일철학의 역사가 추상적 보편에서부터 구체적 보편으로 나아가려는 하나의 특정한 방향성을 지닌 사유운동으로 이해될 ‘가능성’을 지니고 있음을 주장할 것이다(4).
Abstract
The problem of universality between the abstract and the concrete has been a significant theme throughout the history of philosophy. This issue can be observed in various cases, such as Goethe‘s natural science and Hegel’s logic. However, similar concerns can also be found even in some earlier and somewhat unexpected contexts, particularly in Baumgarten’s and Kant’s aesthetics. A closer examination of their works reveals their serious engagement with problems surrounding the abstract, the concrete, universality, and particularity. This article serves as a preliminary study to bring attention to this often-overlooked dimension of the history of philosophy. By selectively analyzing key aspects of Baumgarten’s and Kant’s aesthetics, the article illuminates how the problem of universality between the abstract and the concrete is addressed within their frameworks. To this end, the article first explores Baumgarten’s formulation of aesthetics, which is grounded in Leibniz’s theory of perception (2). It then considers Kant’s discussion of aesthetic reflective judgment and ‘subjective universality’ of judgments of taste as articulated in the Critique of the Power of Judgment (3). Finally, the article argues that the trajectory of modern German philosophy from the Enlightenment to Idealism can be understood as a coherent intellectual movement from abstract universality toward concrete universality (4).
