Abstract

Schopenhauer's metaphysics of will in “the world as a will and representation” reveals a pessimistic interpretation of humans and the world. Schopenhauer's pessimism, unlike Wolf-Leibniz optimism, presents us with the conflicting structure of human life and the world under the control of the blind will to live, and his pessimism, along with E. Hartmann, P Mainländer, and J. Bansen, became a tendency of philosophy to seriously raise questions about the value and meaning of life given to finite humans in the late 19th century while opposing the German speculative philosophy. Schopenhauer's pessimism dismantles the discussions on the nature of humans and the world presented in traditional philosophy and presents a realistic relationship between humans and the world by noting the finiteness of humans under the control of the will. According to Schopenhauer, as is well known, all individuals in the world are visible wills, that is, Objektivation des Willens, and in this respect, the existence of individuals is entirely governed by will. However, this will allows individuals to satisfy their willingness to live constantly, where individuals are placed in confrontation and conflict with each other. According to Schopenhauer, the self-divisive nature of existence of the will makes the lives of all individuals painful, in this respect he emphasizes the impermanence of all beings. Schopenhauer's pessimism highlights that overcoming suffering is the ultimate goal of philosophy, noting the problem of suffering that all humans experience. Schopenhauer's pessimism exposes the nature of humans and the world dominated by blind will, but emphasizes that this experience of pain rather denies the will to live, not just suggests that our lives, which are obsessed with the principle of individualization and the will to live. Schopenhauer's pessimism, which focuses on the positive meaning and role of pain, confirms that the ultimate goal of his philosophy is, in the end, Verneinung des Willens. In this paper, we will look at the starting point of Schopenhauer's pessimistic interpretation of the world and discuss how to criticize the worldview presented by traditional philosophy based on this. And above this, we will examine the nature and active meaning of pain presented by Schopenhauer's pessimism, and finally discuss the meaning and problems of Schopenhauer's denial of will to reach.
