Abstract

This study interprets Donghak (東學) —particularly the thought of Haewol (海月) Choe Si-hyeong (崔時亨) —as a philosophical foundation for a life-affirming and peace-oriented vision of Korean unification. The paper first argues that, within the contemporary Korean context marked by deepening division and social conflict, unification must be understood not merely as the political integration of two states but as a broader task involving the holistic restoration of human beings, society, and nature. Drawing on Yun Noh-bin’s Life-Renewing Philosophy (新生哲學), the study identifies the structural sources of division as a form of “demonic” disruption and proposes the recovery of a unified mode of existence to overcome this disruption. On this basis, the paper reinterprets Haewol’s key concepts, Si-cheonju (侍天主, Serving the Lord of Heaven); Yang-cheonju (養天主, Nurturing the Lord of Heaven); and Dong-gwi-il-che (同歸一體, Returning to One Body); as theoretical resources for a unification philosophy. Haewol emphasizes that all beings embody the life of Heaven and thus possess inherent equality. Through the doctrine of Icheon-sikcheon / Icheon-sacheon (“以天食天”), he conceptualizes natural circulation and mutual aid as principles of life-peace, revealing a vision of existence in which beings sustain and serve one another beyond the superficial logic of the strong preying upon the weak. This framework suggests that genuine unification must be grounded in relational practices which nurture and preserve life. Ultimately, Haewol’s life-peace philosophy proposes a new paradigm of unification, one that transcends division and aspires toward a civilization of salim (life-giving), equality, reverence, and reciprocal flourishment.
