Abstract
The protagonist of Siddhartha initially perceives the world through the belief in an absolute reality behind phenomena, pursuing this higher truth as a transcendental state of unity beyond the mundane. However, his encounter with Gautama marks a turning point, as he comprehends the conditional arising of all phenomena, shifting away from the quest for a transcendental state of unity. Subsequently, Siddhartha undergoes an experiential cognitive process by fully embracing the sensory world and the immediacy of life. Through the symbolic mediation of the river, he demonstrates a transcendence of all conditions and distinctions, reaching a new state of acceptance that surpasses his previous perception. This integrative unity embraces all differentiation while revealing the ‘Buddha’ within all beings. The ‘river’ serves as the ultimate locus of integration and receptivity, embodying his final enlightenment. This meaning of the river—beyond a mere spatial or natural image—resembles the Buddhist concept of 一味 (ilmi), which connotes inclusion and return to oneness beyond dualistic separation. Wonhyo (元曉) identified this as the essence of 金剛三昧經 through the practice of 一味觀行 (ilmi gwanghaeng), emphasizing the dimension of ‘one’ which transcends relative dichotomies such as defilement and purity, truth and delusion. The unified state of mind achieved thereby represents the experiential realization attained through self-reflection and direct practice, revealing the mutual belonging of Buddha and sentient beings at their common origin. Through such reflection individuals break free from dualistic discrimination and attachment, perceiving the world in its original reality, ultimately discussed within the scope of Buddha-nature. This paper focuses on the dialogic potential between the meditative symbolic notion of 一味 (ilmi) and the cognitive transformation of Siddhartha as portrayed in the eponymous novel, exploring the trajectory of this transformation.
