Abstract
This paper seeks to approach The I Ching from a social and political perspective, as a response to the question of whether The I Ching still holds potential for ‘appropriation’ in the contemporary era. Specifically, this study seeks to clarify how The I Ching, understood as a text of divination, may be linked not with governance or institutional politics, but with the domain of the political. To this end, the study explores how Cheng Yi (程頤) interpreted The I Ching within his own socio-political context. Through this, the paper aims to examine the possibility that The I Ching may still be appropriated in meaningful ways today. Cheng Yi’s interpretation of The I Ching does not depict a desperate struggle for survival but rather a socio-political practice through which human nature (性) is realized within the field of political power. His reading reveals an activity whereby individuals express their unique nature in the public realm, thereby constructing a shared human world grounded in li (禮). The I Ching can thus be understood as a classic that expresses such modes of action—essentially a manual for political action. From this perspective, The I Ching is not only open to various forms of appropriation, but also holds the potential to contribute to the formation of academic discourse and the development of a self-referential scholarly field through its engagement with adjacent disciplines such as sociology, political science, and models of action.
