Abstract
This study explores the essential conflicts and the process of final integration in Thomas Merton’s spiritual journey. By applying Bernard Lonergan’s transcendental method, specifically his dialectic and conversion theory, this research analyzes and illuminates the existential and dynamic spiritual journey of this spiritual writer. Through Lonergan’s dialectic, the fundamental conflicts Merton encounters in his spiritual journey are shown to be dialectical, serving as pathways to a deeper encounter with God. The conflicts involving writing and the pursuit of deeper solitude act as significant driving forces for Merton, leading to purification of desires, conversion, transcendence, and integration. Utilizing the theory of conversion, factors resolving Merton’s conflicts include the mystical experience in Louisville, intellectual conversion through deep interreligious dialogue during his Asian pilgrimage involving the concept of emptiness (śūnyatā) and Madhyamika dialectic, and the Polonnaruwa religious experience. These are crucial factors in his final integration. Additionally, Eastern thought, particularly the concept of ‘complementarity’ from Zhuangzi, is noted as a factor in resolving conflicts. Merton’s perspective on final integration expands the theological horizon by adapting insights from Reza Arasteh’s theory of psychological final integration through a process of self-appropriation. Based on this theoretically established view of final integration, Merton embarks on a journey of final integration. In particular, the Polonnaruwa religious experience is a decisive experience where Merton’s conflicts are resolved instantaneously, and final integration is realized. This provides an important clue for the harmony between Christian mysticism and Eastern enlightenment, as well as for interreligious dialogue. Merton’s journey of conflict and final integration can offer new insights and directions not only for individuals and monastic communities but also for the church’s renewal and humanity’s existential crisis.
