Abstract

This paper aims to study and present Thomas Merton’s nonviolence, who was an ascetic and also social critic, and to present appropriate spiritual exercises to live the non-violent life. The basic premise of Thomas Merton’s nonviolence resides in the fundamental unity of all human beings and the dignity of the human as a created being as an image of God. With this foundation of the fundamental unity, Merton regards all kinds of violence as violation of inner dignity of humans. This unity in God became Merton’s non-violent resistance and the fundamental spirit of the peace movement. The principle of the spiritual exercises for the non-violent life found in Merton’s thought is as follows: The first principle of the exercises is achieving the original unity in the concrete in ourselves. In this aspect, Merton’s spiritual exercises for non-violent life, in practices of all forms of the exercises, become the guidance for us to proceed to the fundamental transformation of our consciousness. The second principle of the exercises is guide to the preparation to receive the grace of the contemplative experience and the contemplative vision. The contemplative experience here, means the experience of God who is the root of the existence and the experience of ‘me’ and the world in God vividly. Contemplative vision means to see ‘me,’ the world, and especially all the social issues in view congruent with God’s view. In other words, it is the spiritual view or vision. When we develop the concrete spiritual exercises for the non-violent life, we could make it creatively on the basis of the two principles mentioned above and put them into practice. Solitude, silence, and the experience of God’s presence provide a very practical and actual help for the exercises of the congruent consciousness and the non-violent life.
