침묵과 고독의 수행 신학 ― ‘아파테이아’와 ‘선정’에 관한 기독교-불교의 대화

이 글은 기독교와 불교의 대화를 통해 ‘평정’을 의미하는 ‘아파테이아’(άπάθεια)와 선정(禪定)의 종교철학적 의미를 비교 분석하며 기독교적 선 수행의 신학적 가능성과 필요성을 고찰한다. 영성 신학자 토마스 머튼(Thomas Merton)은 ‘선과 기독교는 미래다’라는 명언을 남겼다. 그는‘기독교적 선’(Christian Zen) 수행을 중심으로 기독교와 불교의 종교 간 대화를 통하여 하나님과의 신비적 일치에 이르는 내적 평정의 중요성을 강조한다. 내적 평정은 신적의식과의 합일을 통해 의식의 지속적 변화를 일으키며 비움과 충만의 의식 변형으로 사회적 변혁을 실현하는 영력의 근원적 토대가 된다. 아파테이아와 선정은 모두 순수한 자아절멸의 상태 속에서 가장 승화된 자기실현으로서의 신적 일치와 반야를 증득하는 ‘인격적 알아차림의 텅 빈 충만’이다. 이 글에서는 ‘수행의 점진적 단계’를 강조한 초기 불교의 경전 『맛지마 니까야』(Majjhima-Nikāya)에 나타난 ‘선정’과 고대 사막 교부로 실천적 수행을 집대성한 에바그리오스 폰티쿠스(Evagrius Ponticus)의 『프락티코스』(Praktikos)에 나타난 ‘아파테이아’를 중심으로 기독교-불교 간 대화를 연결한다.
Abstract
The purpose of this article is to examine the religious philosophical meanings of apatheia and jhāna through a dialogue between Christianity and Buddhism, exploring the theological possibility and necessity of ‘Christian Zen’ practice. Thomas Merton says, ‘Zen and Christianity are the future.’ He emphasizes the importance of inner equanimity to reach mystical unity with God through dialogue between Christianity and Buddhism. Although there are differences between the theory of emotional epistemology and the subjective self-ontology of practice, both concepts include the formation of an illuminating consciousness through the experience of light, sublimation of the unconscious, heshkasm of single-minded prayer and the power of samatha, and vipassanā practice of seeing as it is. Both apatheia and jhāna are ‘empty fullness of personal awareness’ that attains divine unity and wisdom as the most sublimated selfrealization in a state of pure self-annihilation.
