Abstract
For the Renaissance, a period bridging the medieval and early modern eras, the world was an arena of tension between Christian orthodoxy and pagan antiquity. The central question for Renaissance thinkers was: what form should true philosophy or true religion take to overcome this opposition? Marsilio Ficino (1433-1499), a Renaissance Neoplatonist, emerged to answer this question. Rather than simply reinforcing the traditional doctrines of Scholasticism, Ficino shed a brilliant light though a transformative suggestion: constructing an ‘idealized form of Christianity’. To achieve this ambitious goal of establishing Christianity as a comprehensive and potentially universal religion, Ficino strategically introduced the concept of the prisca theologia rather than focusing on a creed’s historical succession. His syncretic attempt to combine the theological and philosophical was primarily oriented towards later Neoplatonism, particularly the theurgic practices of Iamblichus (245-325) and Hermetism in late antiquity. Viewed through this lens, the essence of Ficino's religio-philosophy lies in the ‘theurgic union’ of later Neoplatonism, based on the experience of self-transformation through ritual practices, rather than the contemplative intellectualism of Plotinus. These main principles of Ficino's religio-philosophy can be found in his edifice, De vita libri tres, in particular the discussion on the mediating function and autonomy of the soul in Book III, “De vita coelitus comparanda” in that it clearly shows how and why Ficino adopted late Neoplatonism and Hermetism. Consequently, Ficino's theurgic-natural magical religious philosophy, which sought an ‘idealized form of Christianity,’ achieved a certain level of intellectual legitimacy within the framework of Christianity. His endeavors to integrate philosophy and religion were ultimately embodied in the conceptual terms ‘pia philosophia’ and ‘docta religio’.
