Abstract
This study analyzes domestic and international research trends on Toegye’s philosophy conducted since 2000 by employing systematic literature review (SLR) and quantitative text analysis. To overcome the limitations inherent in the traditional philosophical narrative literature reviews, such as subjectivity and bias in data selection and analysis, this research applies systematic literature review methodology, which is primarily utilized in social science research. A total of 246 articles (220 domestic and 26 international) were collected from academic databases, including RISS, JSTOR, and Wiley. For data analysis, text mining (Textom) was used to measure keyword frequency through Term Frequency Inverse Document Frequency (TF-IDF), while CONCER analysis was employed to classify research topics into distinct categories. Subsequently, the frequency and trend-line graphs of key terms from each category were analyzed. Findings indicate that domestic research on Toegye’s philosophy has shifted from foundational studies focused primarily on traditional issues such as the Four-Seven Debate toward applied studies, including regional studies and practical (educational) approaches. Conversely, international research remains quantitatively limited, heavily influenced by a few specific scholars, rendering quantitative analysis less meaningful. This study demonstrates the applicability of data-driven, objective methodologies in philosophical research and aims to propose a novel approach for analyzing research trends in philosophy.
