Abstract
The purpose of this study is to understand the Vipassanā as presented in the Visuddhimagga. Through this, it seeks to clarify that the wisdom of Vipassanā can be understood as an art of life for sustaining humanity in the age of AI. For this purpose, Chapter 8 of the Visuddhimagga, which deals with the four establishments of mindfulness, is taken as the main textual reference, and the Vipassanā is analyzed with a focus on its characteristic (lakkhaṇa), function (rasa), modes of occurrence (paccupaṭṭhāna), and proximate cause (padaṭṭhāna). Vipassanā is the insight of seeing things not as we “thought them to be”, but as they actually are. From this perspective, the practitioner becomes the observer. Through the eight modes of proper attention, the practitioner observes the in-breath and out-breath as they actually are and thus properly knows and sees the body and mind. In this way, the observer becomes freed from all mental and material processes. In such a sense, the completion of the Vipassanā is the “contemplation of relinquishment,” which holds the dual meaning of “abandoning” all conditioned formations of the mind and “entering” nibbāna. At that moment, consciousness becomes purified and tranquil. As such tranquility is continually reflected upon, The observer becomes able to observe conditioned phenomena without bias. and thus lives a happy daily life as a practitioner endowed with Shame and Fear of Wrongdoing. In Abhidhamma, “Shame (hiri)” is the attitude of “shrinking from evil” which is grounded on self-respect, and “Fear of Wrongdoing (ottappa)” is the attitude of “fearing evil” which is grounded on respect for others. The Visuddhimagga presents these two as guardians of the world (lokapāla). This study interprets these three virtues—neutrality of mind, shame, fear of wrongdoing— as required in the age of AI and platforms. These virtues constitute the ability for self-regulation and self-discipline, as well as mental capacities for thinking from the standpoint of others, and thus have the meaning of an Art of Living cultivated through Vipassanā .
