공산주의 대 파시즘의 관념충돌과 기독교: 조선/한국 기독교 지도자들의 선택을 중심으로

초록

이 논문은 20세기 초 공산주의 대 파시즘의 대결 속에서 기독교, 특 히 일제 하 조선에서 나타난 기독교 지도자들의 대응양상을 당대의 세 계적 관념충돌의 구도 속에서 분석한다. 기독교와 공존 가능했던 사회주의는 1917년 이후 레닌이 이끌던 공 산주의와 대립했다. 프랑스에서는 프랑스 공산당이 프랑스 사회당에서 분화되면서 대립했다. 이탈리아, 독일, 그리고 스페인 등지에서 민족 주의자들과 일부 사회주의자들이 결합한 파시스트 정당이 정권을 잡았 다. 반종교주의를 표방한 공산주의와 반공주의를 표방한 파시즘의 대 결 속에서 유럽의 기독교계 일각에서는 파시즘적 경사 현상이 나타났 다. 조선/한국의 기독교에서는 배교하고 공산주의자가 되는 경우가 생겨 났고, 유럽의 기독교에서 나타난 파시즘적 경사현상에 더해서 반공주 의와 더불어 일본의 아시아주의에 공명하는 파시즘에 대한 ‘이중적 경 사’ 현상이 나타났다. 공산주의와 파시즘의 대결구도 속에서 파시즘적 경사 현상을 보였던 기독교는 파시즘의 몰락을 초래한 제2차 세계대전 종전 이후 세계 곳 곳에서 미국이 주도한 자유민주주의와 연대했다. 그것은 제2차 세계대 전의 또 다른 승자였던 소련이 주도한 공산주의와의 대결을 예고하는 것이었다.

Abstract

This article reconsiders the political reactions of Korean Christian leaders during the ideological conflict between Communism and Fascism in the early 20th century. Since the seizure of power by V. Lenin in 1917, Communism split from Socialism which was compatible with Christianity. In France, the PCF (Parti Communist Français) split from the Socialists (SFIO: La Section française de l’Internationale ouvrière). In Italy, Germany and Spain, by combining elements of socialism with nationalism against Communism, Fascism rose to power. During the conflict between Communism, executing its anti-religionism, and Fascism, executing its anti-Communism, some Christian leaders in Europe showed an inclination to Fascism. In Asia, Japanese Fascism was based on the ideology of Tenno (Japanese Emperor). After World War I, Japan endeavored to insert the clause of “racial equality” into the Covenant of Versailles Peace Treaty, but in vain. After this failure, Japan began to use also Asianism as a source of Japanese Fascism. While some Christian leaders converted to Communism, other Christian leaders in Korea showed a “double inclination” to Japanese Fascism through anti-Communism and Asianism. In the meantime, there were also political leaders, being influenced by Christianity, who maintained the position of Democracy based on individual freedom. During World War II, having defeated Fascism, Christianity sided with liberal democracy led by the U.S., foretelling the other ideological duel with Communism led by the U.S.S.R., another victor of World War II.
