Abstract

The first Sino-Japanese War and the Russo-Japanese War have greatly influenced the history of Northeast Asia. Although there are numerous studies on these events, most of them are based upon the historical description approach, and therefore, they lack the theoretical analysis. This article analyzes these two wars with war theories including power transition theory and rivalry theory. Power transition theory argues that the chance of war between dominant power and the challenger increases when relative power between them rapidly changes in the hierarchical international system. Rivalry theory posits that enduring rivalry is war prone especially when a state militarily competes against its rival for critical interests such as territorial issues. In the late 19th century, China tried to keep its hegemonic power in Northeast Asia and Japan rapidly built up the national strength since the Meiji Restoration. The hostile relationship between them escalated to major war when the relative power swiftly changed in the early 1890s. The first Sino-Japanese War would be explained with power transition theory in the regional sub-system. On the other hand, rivalry theory is plausible in the analysis of the Russo-Japanese relationship in the late 19th and the early 20th centuries, during which they struggled for the interests over Manchuria and Korea.
