Note-taking in Korean-English Interpretation —on Directionality and the Choice of Language

초록

본 연구는 한영순차통역에서 방향성이 통역사들의 노트에 어떠한 영향을 미치는지 알아보기 위한 실험으로써 노트테이킹과 방향성에 대해 실시된 Dam(2004)과 Szabó(2006)의 연구결과를 실험해서 한국어-영어 언어조합에서는 어떤 결과를 도출할 수 있는지 보고자 하는 것이었다. 이를 증명하기 위해 국내에서 통번역대학원을 졸업하고 현재 활동 중인 다섯 명의 전문 통역사를 대상으로 한국어와 영어 양방향으로 순차통역을 진행하고 노트테이킹한 자료를 수집하여 방향에 따른 언어선택을 분석했다. 노트를 분석한 결과 다소 간의 차이가 있었지만 오히려 한국어-영어 언어조합에서는 전문 통역사들이 방향성과 무관하게 출발어를 선호하는 것으로 나타났다. 특히 한-영 방향에서는 출발어인 한국어의 사용 빈도가 다섯 명의 통역사 모두에게서 높게 나타났다 (각각 90%, 53.5%, 68.5%, 85%, 64%). 그러나 영-한 방향에서는 세 명의 통역사가 출발어(영어)를, 두 명이 도착어(한국어)를 더 많이 사용하여 대상 간의 일관적인 선호도를 도출하기 어려웠다. 통역사들의 높은 출발어 사용빈도를 Gile의 Effort model에 입각하여 해석하면 노트를 최대한 빨리 적어 청취와 분석에 할애할 수 있는 작업용량을 늘리기 위한 것으로 볼 수 있다. 또한 한-영 언어조합에서 비롯된 결론일 수 있는데, 노트를 할 때 영어에 비해 한국어가 갖는 효율성이 높기 때문에 한-영 통역에서는 높은 선호도를 보였을 가능성도 있다.
