이 연구에서는 1980년대 이후 진행된 일본사회의 변화가 민족문제를 둘러싼 일본인들의 관념과 실천에 어떤 영향을 가져오고 있는지 고찰한다. 민족적 동질성은 전후 오랫동안 일본의 공식적인 이념이자 널리 공유된 신화이기도 했다. 그러나 최근 진행되어 온 일본사회의 변화는 민족적 정체성과 관련된 그동안의 믿음을 도전하며 심각한 질문을 제기하고 있다. 특히 1980년대 이후 가속화된 국제화의 결과, 일본사회 내부에 여러 이질적인 집단의 규모와 가시성이 크게 증가했으며, “일본인”과 “외국인” 사이의 분명한 범주화를 거부하는 사람들도 늘어났다. 이러한 일련의 변화들이 민족문제를 둘러싼 기존의 관념과 관행에 가져온 영향을 고찰하기 위해 이 연구에선 닛케(日系)브라질인의 경우를 하나의 사례로 분석한다. 혈연적 동일성에도 불구하고 많은 닛케브라질인들이 보여주는 문화적 이질성은 그동안 인종, 문화, 언어의 동일성에 기초해 온 ‘일본인됨’의 관념을 도전하며, 향후 보다 국제화되어 갈 일본사회에 중요한 과제를 제시해 주고 있다.
Abstract
This paper examines changes of the Japanese society caused by recent globalization and assesses their impacts on ethnic concepts and practices. Japanese official ideology has long asserted the ethnic homogeneity of Japan and alleged that she is free of ethnic issues. Recent transformations of the Japanese society, however, have raised series of questions that challenge traditional beliefs and practices regarding ethnic identity. In particular, the 1980s represents a critical moment in postwar Japan in that the hitherto 'homogeneous' society came to experience sudden increase in the number and visibility of foreigners. Accelerated globalization also increased those who defy clear-cut boundaries between "Japanese" and "foreigners". In order to explore effects these changes brought about, the case of nikkei-Brazilians(Brazilians of Japanese descent) who 'returned' en masse to Japan looking for better life chances since the 1990s are analyzed. Nikkei-Brazilians, who have inherited Japanese 'blood' but not necessarily Japanese culture and language, pose particularly vexing questions for Japanese who have assumed eqivalency among race, culture, and language and will be a test case for a truly globalized Japan.
