Abstract
The rise of China has changed the strategic balance of the East Asian power relations. The aim of this paper is to analyze Japan's rise to the great power status during late nineteenth- and early twentieth- century and draw implications for today's Chinese rise from Japan's past experiences. It explores the dynamics between external threat and internal response, the role of state capability in economic growth, and international economic and security conditions.
