Abstract
The post-war Japanese society has been dotted with the strife regarding collective memory about the World War II(the Asia-Pacific War). One of the important contentions about this war in the Japanese society is that “fair” mourning has not been done for innumerable fallen soldiers who were killed during the war. The main objective of this research is to examine the war deads are remembered by the “war-veterans group”, who experienced the war in the battlefield. The veterans group raised the most serious objection against the commemoration of fallen Japanese soldiers in the post-war era. From the group’s perspective, state-initiated mourning of war deads might be abused by nationalistic demagogues in such a way of erasing the inconvenient past by glamorizing their death as a sacrifice for the sacred cause of the nation. The war-veterans group’s voice had not been influential in the post-war Japanese society, and failed to influence the way war deads are commemorated in Japan. This was partly because their view was often perceived to be very emotional and resentful about over having to sacrifice their youth for the meaningless war(i.e., “victim sentiment”). However, it is still worth revisiting their way of mourning war deads, which can be contrasted with the state-initiated commemoration, in the current context of the Japanese society leaning further to the right. The starting point of “authentic” mourning for the victims is to recognize war deads as the beings that do not wish to be taken into the “national commemoration community” without the proper sense of justice, and to appreciate how they would have felt about having to face meaningless death in the battlefield.
