Abstract

With the recent spread of the COVID-19 pandemic, serial entrepreneurs sometimes choose to close their businesses. Social enterprises are emerging as a new alternative as an escape route for serial entrepreneurs. This is because the skills and management know-how that serial entrepreneurs learn from their previous start-up experiences are relatively superior to those of Novice Entrepreneur. However, the level of learning may vary depending on the process experienced in business failure. Therefore, it is very important to build a way to enhance the learning experience of serial entrepreneurs in the process of business failure. The purpose of this study is to understand the attributes learned from the business failure process of serial entrepreneurs who run social enterprises. To this end the process of learning to cope with negative emotions of business failure was analyzed in an integrated manner using the grounded theory approach. In this study, 10 serial entrepreneurs running social enterprises participated, and data were collected by conducting in-depth interviews. This study analyzed the evidence presented by Strauss & Corbin, structured it into a paradigm model according to open coding, axial coding, and selective coding, and developed core categories. As a result of the study, First, 116 concepts, 83 subcategories, and 16 categories were derived in the categorization stage for the basis data for the learning process of serial entrepreneurs with social enterprises. Second, learning experiences were found as causal conditions (internal motivation, extrinsic motivation), context conditions (internal attribution, external attribution), central phenomenon (competence frustration, relational frustration, autonomy frustration), intervening conditions (entrepreneurial self-efficacy, social support), action/interaction strategies (loss-orientation and restoration-orientation, and dual processes), consequences (active change acceptance and discovery of the meaning of learning strategies). Third, based on these research results, a learning process model was developed, and the learning process of serial entrepreneurs with social enterprises was identified as 'stage of start-up failure', 'stage of frustration and overcoming', and three stage of finding acceptance and meaning'. The core category was ‘Building Learning Strategies by Overcoming Negative Emotions’. This study provided information on learning strategies as factors for the growth of social enterprises and education to cultivate entrepreneurial self-efficacy in the course of discussion and business failure. In addition to academic implications for learning and coping with negative emotions of business failure, this thesis provides practical suggestions for sustainable growth strategies to serial entrepreneurs who have failed in business.
