Abstract
While growing attention is being paid to bricolage, research into its boundary condition remains under-explored. This research aims to explore the effects of bricolage strategy on firm performance in small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), with a particular focus on the moderating effects of network diversity and network intensity. Building on the literature review, hypotheses are constructed and tested using the data collected from 221 South Korean SMEs. Results indicate that bricolage is positively related to firm performance. Network diversity is also found to have a moderating effect on the relationship, while network intensity does not. These findings suggest that the resource-constrained SMEs can adopt bricolage as a resource management strategy to improve their performance. They are also highly expected to achieve a better outcome with a high level of network diversity. It implies that in order for the SMEs to maximize the positive effect of bricolage strategy on performance, they should engage actively in building diverse network rather than intensive one. Limitations with suggestions for future research are discussed.
