이 연구는 이제까지 영토분쟁을 다루었던 연구들이 관심을 가졌던 그 원인에 대한 분석들을 토대로 하되 기존 연구들과 조금 달리 영토분쟁의 효과에 초점을 맞춘다. 즉 이 연구는 정치경제학적 문제의식을 토대로 역내국가들 사이의 영토분쟁 격화가 이들 국가 사이의 경제관계에 어떤 영향을 미치는지가 기본 관심사이다. 일반적으로 영토분쟁은 오랜 역사적 뿌리를 가지고 있으며 근대 이후의 식민주의나 침략의 경험과 연계된 민족주의적 감정과 결합되기 때문에 다양한 양상과 방식으로 분쟁 당사국간의 경제관계에 부정적 영향을 미친다는 것이 정설이다. 하지만 자세히 살펴보면 대부분의 분석들은 부정적 영향을 미칠 것이라는 것을 사실상 전제하고 피상적인 증거들과 정책적 조치들을 토대로 그것을 주장할 뿐이며 실질적으로 어떤 영향을 얼마나 미쳤는지를 규명하는 시도는 별로 없었다. 이런 기존 연구들의 맹점을 체계적인 경험적 연구로 보완하는 것이 이 연구의 목적이다.
Abstract
While the existing literature concerns mostly with the causes of disputes, the main analytical focus of this essay is on the economic effects of territorial disputes. This paper analyzes the changes of bilateral economic relations when a territorial dispute between two countries escalates, based on the political economic perspective. Generally speaking, a negative correlation have been recognized between the bilateral economic relations and the escalations of territorial dispute because of deep-rooted historial origins and nationalistic sentiments derived from the harsh memories of colonial rules and invasions. In reality, however, most arguments of negative correlations are less reliable as they are just “argued” without any reliable empirical evidence and research. Indeed, specific empirical analysis of the economic impacts of territorial disputes is rare, and bridging such analytical gap utilizing the approach of economic-security nexus and the case of Senkaku/Diaoyu is the objective of this study.
