An International Comparative Study on the Research Trends in Dance Science

The purpose of this study was to determine what changes have occurred with regard to incorporating dance science in two major Korean journal of dance research, the Korean Journal of Dance, Official Journal of Korean Society of Dance Science, between 2006 and 2010. Specifically, what research topics are prevalent when compared to International Association of Dance Medicine and Science's official Journal? Using content analysis methodology, data were collected from the Korean Journal of Dance(140 articles), Official Journal of Korean Society of Dance Science(121 articles), and Journal of Dance Medicine & Science(80 articles). In these resources, dance science articles were identified and coded under the following topics: ⑴ anatomy and physiology, ⑵ biomechanics, ⑶ general medicine, ⑷ sports medicine and surgery, ⑸ physical medicine and rehabilitation, ⑹ physical therapy, ⑺ dance education, ⑻ kinesiology, ⑼ psychology-sociology, ⑽ nutrition and diet, ⑾ measurement and evaluation, ⑿ dance management. Results showed significant different between two Korean journals and Journal of Dance Medicine & Science. First, biomechanics, sports medicine and surgery, psychology were prevalent in JDMS, while sociology, dance education were prevalent in two Korean journal. Second, the percentage of articles on dancer's health and wellness was critically low in two Korean journal. Finally, it is hard to say that dance science research in Korea is scientific positively because experimental research for dance medicine and science has been rare.
