Abstract

his thesis is focusing on a b-boying performance, ‘The Ballelina who loves a b-boy’ as a consequence of cultural glocalization. B-boying or break dance is a sort of dance form which entered Korea as a part of hiphop culture in the late 80s. These days Korean b-boys are well known for their excellent skills and techniques. Theater performances using b-boying as a main theme have been produced by several teams and these have received favorable reactions by the domestic and foreign public. The performance chosen for the analysis in this thesis shows a good case of hybridization and convergence of cultures and art forms in the global era. In globalization era, nothing cannot avoid being affected by the great influence of transnational companies and capital. That means cultures can be products produced by the worldwide activities of cultural industry. However, although the cultures in the world have shown a tendency of homogenization and standardization, there are still different reactions and different consuming patterns of the same cultural products. These differences can be defined as cultural glocalization and they cause cultural hybridization and convergence.
