세계화 시대 한국 춤 공연의 혼종성에 대한 문화상호주의 고찰

세계화(globalization) 시대 한국 춤 공연은 문화혼종화(cultural hybridization)의 산물이자 그 현장이다. 본 연구는 급속한 세계화 조류 속에서 문화의 지리적 경계는 물론 예술위계마저 모호해지는 동시대 예술현장을 목격하면서 한국 춤 공연에 나타난 혼종현상을 문화상호주의 (interculturalism)의 논의를 빌려 설명하고자 했다. 문화상호주의는 1970, 1980년대 성행했던 공연예술 창작과 실험의 경향이자 논의이다. 초기 공연예술의 문화상호주의자들은 문화의 접점에서 일어나는 문화혼종을 창의적 예술의 기회로 생각했다. 이들은 의도적으로 타문화 요소를 섞는 문화상호주의 공연을 실험함으로써 새로운 무대언어를 창조하고 타문화를 이해할 수 있다고 주장했다. 그러나 세계화가 가속화된 동시대 예술 환경은 문화상호주의의 이론적 위기로 비춰지고 있다. 더 이상 문화와 문화를 만나게 할 수 없을 정도로 세계화는 시간과 공간의 압축하고 있다. 또한 문화의 이동과 혼종의 출현 이면에 작용하는 권력관계를 간과한다는 비판을 받아왔다. 곧 서구화와 근대화의 다른 이름처럼 작동하는 세계화의 정치경제적, 사회문화적 맥락을 고려하지 못한다는 한계가 지적되었다. 본 연구는 문화상호주의 논의가 내보인 이러한 한계에도 불구하고 한국 춤 공연에 관찰되는 문화혼종화 현상의 이해에 문화상호주의 관점의 유용성을 고찰하고 논의의 확산을 제안하고자 했다. 이에 프랑스 공연예술학자인 파트리스 파비스(Patrice Pavis)의 문화상호주의 논의를 중심으로 문화상호주의를 소개하고 한국 춤의 혼종성 연구와의 관련성을 모색하고 있다. 또한 한국 춤 공연에 나타난 문화혼종 현상의 설명을 위해 서구중심의 문화상호주의에 비판적 접근의 필요함을 언급한다. 동시대 한국 춤공연은 한국문화와 수입문화, 전통문화와 현대문화, 고급문화와 대중문화 등 문화의 여러 접점에서 교류하고 변형을 일으키고 있다. 더욱이 전자매체와 네트워크의 보급으로 공연예술의 문화상호적 맥락과 접점은 더욱 다면화, 다층화하고 있다. 공연예술의 문화상호주의는 공연의 제작과 사회적 수용을 중심으로 문화이동의 과정과 맥락을 이해하는 관점과 분석도구를 제공해 준다. 특히 공연에 참여한 사람과 공연이 수용되는 사회문화적 맥락에 주목하게 함으로써 타문화전통이 자문화로 이동하는 과정을 구체화한다. 문화상호적 접점이 복잡해지는 세계화 시대 한국 춤 공연의 혼종성 이해에 문화상호주의는 여전히 유용한 관점을 제공한다
Abstract
Korean concert dances are spaces where cultural hybridization is taking place in the global era. Globalization has blurred and mixed the territorial boundaries between cultures, and the hierarchical boundaries between art genres. This study tries to shed light on these phenomena of cultural hybridization in Korean concert dances by revising a debatable term interculturalism. Interculturalism was a continuous tendency in the field of Western performing arts in the 1970s and 1980s. The researchers and practitioners in this field had a belief that cultural hybridization could give human beings a way to reach an universal culture. They also regarded the hybridization as a chance for creating arts. They intended to mix exotic factors of other cultures with their own theatrical traditions when they created a piece of performing art. However, interculturalism has seemed to experience a theoretical crisis since the accelerating flows of globalization which means a compression of space and time. We realize that we cannot make cultures meet anymore. Interculturalism has been criticized in terms that it did not consider properly power relations operated behind the migration of cultures. Despite this limitation of interculturalism, this study suggests that analytic tools and views of interculturalism should be revised for understanding Korean concert dances in the globalized world. The study tries to scrutinize interculturalism of performing arts in relation to various and complex intersectional boundaries between cultures. The analysis of dances based on interculturalism provides a perspective focusing on the social and cultural contexts in which a dance work is accepted in Korean society. Interculturalism also helps us to take different people who participate in creating dance works from choreographer to audience, more seriously. In the global era which intercultural exchanges and cultural intersections are getting more and more complex, interculturalism is still an effective and useful perspective to understand cultural hybridization in Korean dance works
