Abstract
The study explores the stylization of dances with horses in Bartabas's Eclipse. Bartabas has created a unique brand of Zingaro equestrian theatre. His work shows an new art form that defies a fusion of dance, music, poetry, classical dressage with its own rules and its own kind of beauty. Eclipse is non-verbal theatre where the main expression of performance is composed in a highly stylized form by choreography of men and horses. Using Pansori (one man's guttural singing opera), Sinawui and Sanjo, Bartabas choose Korean music for its universal quality in Eclipse. Korean music drives the whirlpool of dance movements. Bartabas uses musicality in dance. The harmonized world where human beings and horses could communicate is expressed by the alternation of Yin and Yang. Black-and-white themes are concentrated in lighting, stage designs, costumes, horse colors and racially mixed casting. The severe black-and-white, mainly Korean-inspired costumes and the singing of Pansori in Korean language create a formal Korean and Far Eastern atmosphere. The concept of Eclipse is reflected in the circle-shaped stage design and in the way. Variations of circles are created with choreography. The pale image of the moon is portrayed by dance movement and lighting. The choreographies of important dances with horses show the following aspects: horses walking, prancing and galloping; dance with black and white fans on top of riding horse; a solo dance with long fabric inspired by Korean Buddhist monk's dance; dancers and horses interacting; dressage; monk's dance on top of a horse using wind created by horse riding. The way in which a horse walks evokes a traveler under various landscapes and moods. Images are built up and make a succession of tableaux, followed by a very simple communicative story conveying imagination. Eclipse evokes the deep roots of relationship between man and horse through choreography, representing chemistry between horse and human. He underlined certain scenes by using a cinematic language "freeze frame" where time and space are frozen like a photography enforcing the meaning of that moment.
