Since the 1990’s, environmental and drug problems are two main issues of global dimension. However, it was only ten years ago that these issues were integrated in the global perspective. In this context, it passed over 40 years that two issues did not link in the drug issues between the United States and Latin America. Because the US drug policy toward Latin American since the 70’s has concentrated on supply reduction strategies. In this process, environment problems derived from drug trafficking is always dropped in the priority of polices. The purpose of this article is to analyze drug trafficking in the perspective of environmental security in Colombia. To do this, this paper, firstly, will address why drug trafficking should be evaluated in the environmental security. Secondly, environmental problems derived from drug trafficking is to discuss in the three perspectives: 1) environmental problems in the process of coca cultivation; 2) environmental problems in the process of cocaine processing; 3) environmental problems from the use of herbicides in the process of War on Drugs. Finally, this paper will propose some policy alternatives.
