Abstract

This study offers an in-depth analysis of the distinctive role of dance within Alain Badiou's philosophical system, re-examined through a crit- ical dialogue with contemporary dance theory and practice. Badiou's con- cept of ‘inaesthetics’ positions art not merely as an object of aesthetic ap- preciation but as one of four autonomous truth procedures—alongside sci- ence, politics, and love—that generate truth. Within this framework, in “Dance as a Metaphor for Thought”, Badiou characterizes dance as an art form that metaphorizes pure thought prior to its linguistic articulation— the very emergence of the ‘event’. This paper begins by reconstructing Badiou's ontology, event, and subject theories to demonstrate how his theory of dance emerges as a necessary ex- tension of his philosophical system. It pays particular attention to the in- troduction of the ‘body’ concept in his later work, exploring dance's potential to serve as a concrete model of the subjectivation process. Moreover, ac- knowledging criticisms that his theory embodies a Platonic idealization, this study engages in a dialogue with the specific choreographic worlds of Pina Bausch and Jérôme Bel. Through this engagement, the paper reveals both the formidable analytical power and the evident limitations of Badiou's theory, ultimately investigating how his philosophy can act as a productive contradiction in understanding contemporary dance.
