Abstract
Herein, the thermal expansion behavior of clathrate hydrates with ammonium fluoride (NH4F) was investigated. Water and NH4F comprise a ‘host’ hydrate structure, where ‘guest’ molecules, including propylene oxide, 2-methyl-2-propen-1-ol, and methanol, are captured in hydrate cages. The X-ray diffraction patterns of the hydrate samples were examined, confirming the formation of a cubic Fd3m hydrate. Notably, methanol can be captured in the hydrate cages with NH4F. The lattice parameters of the clathrate hydrates with NH4F were found to be smaller than those of the clathrate hydrates with pure water. In addition, the lattice parameters of clathrate hydrates encapsulating 2-methyl-2-propen-1-ol and methanol were larger than those with propylene oxide and methane due to the effects of molecular size and shape. Finally, the effects of molecular size and shape on the thermal expansivity of clathrate hydrates with NH4F were confirmed.
