Abstract
The study conducted in-depth interviews with 11 run-trip participants to broaden the understanding of run-trip, an emerging running culture among Generation MZ. Data were analyzed using Strauss & Corbin's (1990) grounded theory methodology. As a result, 17 higher-order categories and 37 subcategories were derived. An axial coding paradigm model was developed to identify the participation process and factors underlying run-trip experiences. The findings revealed that run-trip experiences lead to 'bonding and socialization' and 'recording and sharing the run trip', which are influenced by several key factors: 'running course and natural environment', 'community support and social interactions', 'the roles of running leaders and running crews', 'participation type-specific contents', and 'professional running photography'. The study made two significant additional findings. First, run-trip participation can be categorized into three types based on the degree of running involvement: 'run-trip for running itself', 'run-trip as a process of running', and 'run-trip as a fun experience'. Second, the practice of taking and sharing photos and videos has differential effects on enhancing participation, experience, and sustainability of a run-trip, depending on the type of participation. Theoretically, this study contributes to expanding academic discussions on run-trip within the frameworks of sports tourism and special interest tourism by presenting a participation typology based on involvement levels. Practically, it provides insights for local governments and travel agencies in developing run-trip programs.
