Abstract

The objective of this study was to investigate the geochemistry of mine drainage and the yellow-colored iron hydroxide formed in the abandoned Hwasun coal mine. The pH value of the acid mine drainage from the adit of the mine varied from 7.19 to 8.03. The mine drainage contained dissolved Fe ion in the range of 0.048mg/l to 1.6 mg/l, which formed yellow-colored iron-hydroxide. The iron-hydroxide contained Fe2O3 in the range of 22.87 wt.% to 55.07 wt.%. The As ion in the mine drainage was dissolved with As concentrations in the range of 76.94 ㎍/l to 167.9 ㎍/l, and the content of As in the yellow-colored iron-hydroxide was in the range of 8400 mg/kg to 21300 mg/kg. It was thought that the dissolved As ion in the mine drainage may be adsorbed by the yellow-colored iron-hydroxide due to adsorption and co-precipitation. This amorphous iron-hydroxide would be used as an absorbent to remove the As ion as well as heavy metal ions in the mine drainage. Sheathed-filament and twist-stalk structures were observed in the amorphous iron-hydroxide. It is suggested that this is a microorganism that produces the iron-hydroxide. The EDS analysis detected Fe and As ions on the iron-hydroxide which were attached to the sheathed-filament and the twisted-stalk were detected by EDS analysis. To identify the sheathed-filament and twisted-stalk as a micro-organism, the mixture of mine water and iron-hydroxide in the mine drainage were cultured in a medium which contained peptone with FeSO4・7H2O at 32℃ for 7 days. The sheathed-filament and twisted-stalk structures were observed clearly in the medium.
