Abstract
The purpose of this study was to investigate the adsorbents of lower cost and easier availability than the conventional As adsorbents and to verify its applicability. Coffee waste, red-yellow soil, red mud and rice straw were used as adsorbents in As(III) input experiment, and the removal efficiencies of total As were 11.7%, 40.0%, 70.8% and 12.6%, respectively. Results of As(V) input experiment showed that the removal efficiencies of total As were 10.7%, 82.3% 80.6% and 19.7%, respectively. Red-yellow soil and red mud can serve as adsorbent candidates of As treatment in terms of the removal efficiency. Coffee waste may be considered as a co-adsorbent of As(III) removal due to its high capacity of As(III) oxidation. However, disadvantages such as the low removal efficiency, the need of mineralogical and geochemical characterization of on-site red-yellow soil, and the strong alkalinity of red mud should be solved through precedent studies for on-site application.
