Abstract

This study evaluated the potential of T-sludge, a coal-derived industrial by-product, for reuse as an adsorbent to remove arsenic species (As(III) and As(V)) from water. Isothermal and kinetic experiments were conducted to assess the effects of concentration, contact time, and pH. As(V) rapidly reached equilibrium at low concentrations, whereas As(III) exhibited slower adsorption but achieved higher uptake at elevated concentrations. The Langmuir isotherm model best fit the behavior of As(V), suggesting a strong adsorption affinity at low concentrations. The Dubinin–Radushkevich model further confirmed that both arsenic species were primarily removed through ion-exchange- based chemisorption. The kinetic results revealed that the pseudo-second-order model fit well across pH ranges, with As(V) demonstrating an initial adsorption rate 9.41 times higher than that of As(III), indicating faster removal. These results confirm T-sludge’s potential as a sustainable arsenic adsorbent and provide foundational data for practical water treatment applications.
