Abstract

This paper examined microbial enhanced oil recovery (MEOR), which is an environmentally-friendly and economically-feasible method. Although interest in renewable energy has recently increased, the world is still using crude oil as the primary source of energy. Therefore, research is actively underway to further produce a great fraction of the oil-in- place. MEOR utilizes biotechnology to improve oil recovery as a third method of production. In this paper, the analysis focuses on the scopes, major mechanisms, and field applications of MEOR. The mechanisms were briefly investigated by describing the role of each bioproduct to produce oil. The reviewed mechanisms included selective plugging, wettability alteration, reservoir rock dissolution, and oil degradation. Through the examination of field applications, this study assessed past performances and the potential of MEOR.
