Our paper discusses the challenges for American foreign policy in an age of anti-Americanism. Given systematized opposition to American foreign policy within global publics, American policy makers should heed its implications for global governance. We trace the motivating events and characteristics of this policy context in Europe, the Middle East and Russia, and Greater Asia to draw implications for how the United States should modify its geopolitical strategy in each theatre. Since anti-Americanism is subject to elite manipulation for domestic and national political interests, we suggest a policy of tailored engagement, one that balances regional ambitions with international governance, to counteract its influence. By allowing other powers to form supportive regional and multilateral linkages, the interests and foreign policy of the United States and other nations may be better accomplished, and the causes of anti-Americanism counteracted.
