Abstract

Images illustrating asterism by using several dots and lines have appeared in almost every culture. Defining an asterism, that is, connecting dots by arbitrary lines, requires imagination and creativity. Moreover, to be approved as an “asterism,” the combination of dots and lines should be collectively accepted by members of a community. Therefore, asterism images included in visual materials deserve to be highlighted because they are not just a result of copying nature but of a complex process including recording, understanding, and symbolizing the sky and stars. This paper investigates a Goryeo Buddhist painting, Assembly of Tejaprabhā Buddha, the Butiange (Song of Pacing Heaven), a constellation book, circulated in Joseon Korea, and the star map Cheonsang yeolcha bunya jido (Chart of the Constellations and the Regions they Govern) produced by Joseon astronomers as cases of asterism images created within a similar regional and temporal context. By examining them, I shed light on the common features such as the characteristics of asterism and the visual representation of the brightness of a star in 14-15th-century Korea. These features often show discrepancies with earlier Chinese counterparts or texts that were not derived from ignorance or indifference to cutting-edge astronomical knowledge from China but from regional traditions of how to draw asterisms. In this sense, it seems that asterism images are not a result of understanding stars based on a certain text or doctrine. Rather, the images were heavily influenced by the local pictorial convention shared by the artists and astronomers of the time. Consequently, the deeply-rooted pictorial convention in drawing asterisms may have also influenced how to perceive asterisms. Additionally, through the religious icon Assembly of Tejaprabhā Buddha, this paper suggests that asterism images were given further religious significance in the Buddhist context even though they were illustrated in the same way as the asterism images in the non-Buddhist Butiange and Cheonsang yeolcha bunya jido. Overall, this study discusses cheonmun (Ch. tianwen), a notion encompassing astral worship, astrology, astronomical calculation, almanac, geomancy, meteorology, and so forth. The 14-15th-century Korean peninsula, where the Buddhist paintings, constellation books, and star maps were produced, also witnessed this broad idea exert its influence in various fields, but not as a grand theory. Under the rubric of cheonmun (J. tenmon), a long-held tradition in East Asian countries, different ideas of heaven have coexisted like accumulated layers. Both depicting Tejaprabhā Buddha and his stellar pantheon and recording celestial bodies were a part of this cheonmun tradition.
